Adverse effects of Phenytoin

HHirsutism, Hypertrophy of gums

OOsteomalacia

T– Teratogenic

MMegaloblastic anemia

AAtaxia and nystagmus

LLymphadenopathy

IInhibits release of insulin (hyperglycemia)

KVitamin K deficiency

AArrhythmia


As Phenytoin is teratogenic, it causes certain malformations in the fetus called as Fetal hydantoin syndrome. The features of an affected fetus can be remembered by the mnemonic PCM

PHypoplastic Phalanges

CCleft lip and palate

MMicrocephaly
