Hematemesis

HEMATEMESIS means the vomiting of frank or altered coffee-ground blood from the upper GI-tract, from a lesion proximal to the duodeno-jejunal junction or the Ligament of Treitz.

This lesion may manifest as Hematemesis or Malaena.

MALAENA is the passage of altered blood in the form of black tarry stools.

CAUSES OF HEMOPTYSIS:
-Gastric ulcer
-Duodenal ulcer
-Gastric erosion
-Ruptured Oesophageal varices (Portal hypertension)
-Mallory Weiss syndrome
-Cancer Stomach or Oesophagus
